Is Mark Zuckerberg Jesus?

“… for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.” (Luke 12:15)
“If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor…” (Matthew 19:20)

As we near Christmas, the story of Jesus is surely being told in various ways (from mangers to movies) across the country and around the world. In its most basic form, it’s the story of a man who gave up everything for what he believed, and assuming the stories of his life are true, it was no small sacrifice. Now before you click away, this isn’t intended to be some sort of religious post about the meaning of Christmas. Instead, I think its important to take a look at what I believe to be a demonstration of the philosophy of Jesus.

Mark Zuckerberg announced recently that he plans to give half of his wealth, estimated at $6.9 billion, away to charity. Joining Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, and others in the Giving Pledge initiative, he plans to donate at least half of his money to charity either during his lifetime or after his death. But I don’t think Zuckerberg will be waiting long. “People wait until late in their career to give back. But why wait when there is so much to be done? With a generation of younger folks who have thrived on the success of their companies, there is a big opportunity for many of us to give back earlier in our lifetime and see the impact of our philanthropic efforts,” he said in a statement.

You can see the correlation, right? Today, Christianity is marked more by consumption than sacrifice, more by getting than giving. But the philosophy of Jesus was radically different. While Zuckerberg’s reputation has taken a hit this year, I think it’s important to realize how he is living his life. He lives modestly and he gives huge amounts of money away. Of course critics will argue that giving half of his wealth away still leaves him with $3.5 billion which is hardly struggling. But to them I ask, when is the last time you gave half of your money away? A large number of people around the world live on less than a dollar a day, so your $30,000 salary might as well be $7 billion.

I don’t know Mark Zuckerberg’s religious beliefs, but to me, he looks more like Jesus than many people who claim “to follow Him.”

  • my thoughts exactly. How many of US would live like he does, with that kind of money in the bank? I try to be a good man, and yet with his money, Id be a nightmare worst than Charlie Sheen on crack. HATS OFF to the NOBLE billionaires, of whom there are so few, Gates(yes i know he was a jerk eearly on, but his wife changed him into a SAINT in Gods eyes), Buffet (born sainty), and now Zuckenberg!!!! Though Apple has made a helluva comeback, Jobs is still an unloveable dick though. SOrry Steve, but ya KNOW its true—Signed, Daniel, Jesus’ pet pig
